Artist Statement

I have always been fascinated by the human spirit, or perhaps more accurately, by our capacity for deep, sincere feeling and adapting to great change when it is called for. As a visual artist who is inspired by the figure, I create imagery that explores this vast and varied accommodation for emotion and transition. My love of storytelling lends itself to the creation of emotionally charged visual narratives. To create these narratives, I favor materials such as oil paint, graphite, wood, and wax– oil paint being my preferred mode of expression. These materials, not unlike the human subjects I portray, are organic in nature and ripe with expressive capability.

Major themes in my work include vulnerability and self-preservation, despair and renewal, death and life, turmoil and tranquility. Elements such as water, rock, and salt mirror the human element in their ability to adapt and change state. It is only fitting in my mind that these versatile organisms—both animal and mineral– interact and converge in visual narrative form.

Though inspiration for individual works may derive from personal events from my life, the emotional content is intended to engage on a universal, human level. I paint and depict the world as I experience it: through female eyes but although my gender is female, I inhabit the world as any human does: with the potential for experiencing a vast range of emotions and of undergoing change. It is my hope that the visual elements of my work be arresting and enthralling enough to forge a true emotional connection with the narrative.
